A dump trailer earns its keep on one number — how much it moves per trip — and loses it on one mistake: buying hydraulics too light for the material. Here’s how to spec one that lasts.

Size by material, not by deck

Gravel runs ~1.4 tons per cubic yard, wet dirt more. A 6×10 with 2ft sides holds ~3.7 yd³ heaped — that’s over 5 tons of gravel, which is why GVWR matters more than box size. Lift style

• Scissor lift — the all-rounder: stable, strong mid-lift, handles uneven loads. Our default recommendation.
• Telescopic (single-ram) — highest dump angle for sticky loads, common on big tandems.
• Dual piston — budget-build style; fine for light duty, weakest mid-lift.

Gates, sides & the details pros check

• Combo gate (swings AND spreads) — gravel spreading + barn-door loading in one. Worth it.
• Side height: 2ft sides load easily with a skid steer; 3–4ft sides carry volume (mulch, debris) but raise the center of gravity.
• Battery + charger: the pump runs on 12V — look for a charge line from the truck and a locking pump box.
• Ramps: slide-in ramps turn a dump into a mini equipment hauler.

Operating rules that save trailers

Dump on level ground only (side-slope + raised box = tip-over), pull forward as the load spreads, and never top up hydraulic fluid with the box raised. Grease the pivot points monthly in season.
