Used cargo trailers are where the deals live — and where the money pits hide. This is the 15-minute inspection we’d run on any used box before money moves, and it works whether you buy from us or off Marketplace.
The walk-around (5 minutes)
- Tires: read the DOT date code — trailer tires age out (5–6 years) long before the tread wears. Cracked sidewalls = immediate replacement money.
- Frame & tongue: sight down the rails for kinks or fresh paint over welds; surface rust is fine, scaling rust is not.
- Coupler & chains: latch action, ball wear, chain hooks intact.
- Lights: plug in and run every function — corroded connectors tell on stored-outside trailers.
The box (5 minutes)
- Roof seams from inside on a bright day: pinholes of light = leaks.
- Floor: bounce-test corners and around the door; soft plywood means water got in.
- Doors: ramp springs lift smoothly, barn doors seal tight, hinges dry.
Underneath (5 minutes)
- Bearings: jack a wheel, spin and rock — growl or wobble = service due.
- Brakes: tandem axles should have electric brakes; verify with a controller.
- Suspension: broken leaf springs and shackle wear hide up there.
