Container Grades Explained: One-Trip, Cargo-Worthy, WWT & As-Is

Container grading isn’t standardized by law — it’s trade shorthand. But the terms below are used consistently by honest dealers, and knowing them is the difference between a bargain and a leaky mistake.

One-trip (“new”)

Built overseas, loaded once for the crossing, then sold. Expect near-new paint, tight door seals, clean floors. This is the grade for conversions, offices, and anything visible. It’s also the only grade where color choice is usually available.

Cargo-worthy (CW)

Certified structurally sound for shipping: doors work, floor solid, no light through the walls. Cosmetics vary — dents and surface rust are normal. The workhorse grade for serious storage at a fair price.

Wind- and water-tight (WWT)

One step below CW: no leaks, doors seal, but it’s no longer certified for ocean transport. For ground storage that’s a distinction without a difference — WWT keeps contents dry and usually costs less than CW.

As-is

Sold in described condition, no promises. Could be a floor project, could be rust-through. Only buy as-is when you’ve seen photos, priced the repair, and have a plan. We disclose known condition details on every as-is listing before purchase.

How to read a listing like a pro

• Grade named explicitly (“used” alone is not a grade).
• Photos of the actual unit or an honest description of the class.
• Age matters less than condition — a dry 15-year-old box beats a leaky 8-year-old one.
• Check the floor and door seals first; walls second; cosmetics last.
